I literally have no idea what it’s like to be ashamed of my skin color. I have my mother to thank for that. I will never know just how intentional she was about it ~ especially having been educated in a segregated kindergarten class ~ but she somehow managed to instill in me a humble confidence that has never thought twice about whether or not my brown skin and black girl features are beautiful. Thanks, mom. God rest your magical black girl soul.
