Well, friends . . . the end of all things is at hand. That was true before a pandemic in an American presidential election year. It was true when Jesus said it before He allowed Himself to be cursed on a tree for our sakes . . . after He was baptized by His cousin John, and following His temptation in the wilderness . . .

“Now when He heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled . . .

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand. {Matthew 4:12-17}

Genesis is one of my favorite books in the Bible. All scripture is God-breathed and profitable for instruction . . . and sometimes a passage or a book just hits different. Ha. For me, Genesis is one of those. We’re actually studying it this year in Bible Study Fellowship, and one of the things that strikes me is how full-circle we seem to have come in our society . . . in many cases, people are questioning and confused by fundamental truths on what seems to be a much larger scale, and if nothing else – with much louder voices. In the name of inclusivity {and perhaps desperate searching}, more people seem to show respect towards worship rituals and spiritual practices.

If the Bible wasn’t so clear on the fact that satan continually blinds the minds of unbelievers, it really would be absolutely baffling to think about the sweeping inconsistencies and logical fallacies that swirl around on social media.

Lately it has felt like our society is engaged in some dreadful game of “Science Says”. Science says a six year old can decide he wants to be a she. But Science says you can’t just decide to be another “race” . . . Science says reduce your carbon footprint and save the planet. But Science says it’s ok to kill the babies that would have inherited it. {Who are we saving the planet for when people keep killing their own children?} . . . Science says don’t be problematic trash that doesn’t value the progression of the human species that got here by accident and is evidently no longer operating under the mantra of survival of the fittest except when it conveniently furthers the political and personal agendas of those who fund the Science that says.

I really wasn’t planning on a rant, and I’m not judging anybody for esteeming science. {I’m also not judging women and men who have encouraged or participated in abortions . . . there is forgiveness and healing for the repentant.} I’m just saying that our society is woefully inconsistent with regard to the value of human life. Science is a faulty foundation when poorly practiced and not filtered through objective truth {which can only be found from the heart of God}.

Many people approach spirituality with equal inconsistency . . . often because their understanding of what science is leads them to do so.

While looking through VSCO photos I started to notice a trend of beige youth from midwest America taking group photos with white bedsheets over their heads. At first I was like, yikes – next. But I just kept seeing it. So finally, I googled to find out if this was just blatant and unapologetic klan activity or . . . ? What I stumbled upon was an article where some teenager was feigning ignorance and explaining that he was just “craving that halloween vibe.” Another contributor to the article explained that mostly people who participated in the trend were trying to disengage {from reality} by “building this other spooky world”. . . I find it hard to believe that any one in America could be that clueless and ignorant. But let’s just give the youth the benefit of the doubt . . .

The thing is, you can’t separate evil from evil. By trying to build a “spooky” world and summon the vibe of halloween, you are inviting all kinds of uncleanness. Regardless of how halloween may have originated, it’s clear that what these people are referring to is spiritual darkness . . . so in what way – other than personal affect – is celebrating halloween by dressing up in janky “ghost” costumes that “spookily” resemble the established attire of murderous supremacists spiritually different from indulging in murderous horror films and finding other ways to play with fear, magnify death, and quite literally terrorize people? We don’t have the spiritual capacity to pick the raisins out of a cookie . . . a little leaven leavens the whole lump. If one person can dress up in reference to a character in a horror film, who gets to decide that someone else shouldn’t dress up in reference to a character from a historical horror film . . .

I think what many people fail to recognize is that they are being spiritually influenced in one way or another. It’s not just some random thought or idea you had to summon the vibe of halloween and build a spooky world . . . there is an evil one who benefits from people yielding to his invitations . . . one who relies on people deciding to open the portals of hell, if you will.

So that’s why I think it’s a terrible idea for believers to celebrate halloween . . . I don’t think it’s worth fighting over, but I do think that now is a good time for those of us who love Jesus and are actively praying, thy kingdom come, thy will be done – on earth as it is in Heaven to evaluate if we are counter-acting those prayers with our actions, subcultures, and traditions. When it comes to non-essential things like halloween, it can often be helpful to think about whether or not Jesus would have done it, or if we’ll be doing it in heaven. Unfortunately, I think it can be all too easy to decide that Jesus would do what we would do. But if you are a serious student of the Word, would you honestly come to the conclusion that the Kingdom of Heaven will be – on any day of the year – decorated with death and darkness?

One of the ways that God is continually pruning me is with regard to self-righteousness and hyper-vigilance. That being said, it is my genuine heart’s desire to have a life that reflects foretastes of Heaven. As much as is possible, I want God’s Kingdom to come and His will to be done in my life. I want to be as close as possible to the Father who adopted me into His family . . . I don’t want so much as a spider web coming between us. ha.

Now the works of the flesh are evident:

sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.

I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. {Galatians 5:19-21}

the end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. {1 Peter 4:7}
